Professional Headshots & Creative Portraits in Tampa: A Studio Session with Aileen Hnatiuk
If you’re looking for updated professional headshots in Tampa or want to explore a more expressive, editorial-style portrait session, you’re in the right place. I recently had the chance to photograph Aileen Hnatiuk, a sports reporter for WFLA News in Tampa, and her session is a great example of how we can combine both clean studio headshots and more creative portraits — all in one shoot.
Like most sessions in my studio, we started off casually. We talked through what Aileen needed the photos for — some were for professional use, others for more personal branding. While I adjusted the lighting setup, we kept things relaxed. That’s how I like to run my studio portrait sessions: more like a conversation with a camera involved.
When Photographing people that will likely have their image used for promotion that could involve text I usually like to include some shots that have a lot of negative space around them.
We began with classic headshots — polished, neutral, and perfect for her role in media. I always aim for headshots that feel clean and current, but still true to who you are. The lighting setup I use in the studio helps bring out natural skin tones and flattering shadows without making anyone feel like they’re under a spotlight.
Once we nailed the more formal headshots, we transitioned into something a little more creative. Same outfit, different lighting. I made a few adjustments to create a moodier, editorial look — one that gives more personality and edge while still keeping things simple.
These kinds of portraits are perfect if you’re looking for something beyond the standard corporate headshot in Tampa — something that feels a little more like you.
Same pose as the previous picture, but this time using hard light. I’m a sucker for shadows! Go ahead and look back and forth, let me know which lighting set up you prefer!
Aileen was amazing to work with — natural in front of the camera and open to experimenting. That openness is what allows for great creative portraits. These types of shots are ideal for personal websites, speaking engagements, or just capturing a side of yourself that isn’t all about work.
The light got moodier, the expressions more intentional. We explored subtle shifts in pose and tone — nothing overdone, just honest, strong portraits that show dimension.
I was really digging the black and white edits with the contrast of her suit and the backdrop.
When people come to my Tampa photo studio, I always encourage them to think beyond just what they “need.” Yes, you might need a headshot — but you might also walk away with a photo you didn’t know you were missing. Something bold, expressive, and yours.
There’s real value in having both styles: the image you send to the office, and the one you frame for yourself.
I think it’s cool to show a little big (or a lot) of surrounding scene when shooting in the studio.
So if you're a young professional in Tampa (or just someone who’s ready to refresh how you show up online), this kind of session might be exactly what you’re looking for. A little structure, a little creativity, and a lot of collaboration.
